The founding of the University of Freiburg belongs to Austria, so it was named after its patron, Grand Duke Albrecht VI (Latin for Albertina). It was the second university of the Habsburgs in Austria after Vienna University. Initially set up four major departments: theology, law, medicine and philosophy. The philosophy at that time included the so-called "five arts", a compulsory subject for all students.
In 1620, the University of Freiburg became a fortress of Catholic faith. Although it triggered the rise of humanistic thoughts in the beginning, it became an obstacle to scientific research. In the 18th century, due to the emergence of new disciplines, universities clearly moved towards liberalization in religious beliefs.
With the establishment of Baden in 1806, the existence of the university was threatened because the relatively small state of Baden already had an important university, Rupplecht-Karls-Heidelberg. However, the Baden State Highway Dervich still provided stable funding to the University of Freiburg from 1817 and established it in the form of a handwritten book in 1820. The Grand Duke always believed that two religions-Catholic and Protestant-should each have a university to represent it, and Heidelberg University was heavily influenced by Protestantism. For this reason, the University of Freiburg was renamed Albrecht-Ludwig-Freiburg University as a thanks.
In the early 19th century, the university established its first student body. The oldest surviving student body is Corps Rhenania Freiburg, founded in 1812 with funding.
Both the number of students and the number of college coefficients have increased significantly since the 1880s. The university had 3,000 students before World War I. In 1898, the University of Freiburg became the first university in German history to accept female students. At the beginning of the 20th century, universities must build a large number of new buildings to adapt to the development of modern universities. As a result, the old town of Freiburg and the surrounding area became home to university buildings. For example, the main building of the Department of Philosophy is the most important youth-style building in Baden. Its red brick wall and tower remain to this day Freiburg's iconic building.
Jewish teachers and students were persecuted during the Nazi period in 1933. After the war closed, the university reopened after World War II. The war-torn university has been rebuilt under difficult conditions. The university had 10,000 students in 1961 and 20,000 in 1980. In the 2002/2003 school year, there were 20,495 registered college students.
The University of Freiburg is in a good state. The University of Freiburg is one of the nine elite universities funded by the German government. Located on the border between France and Germany, it is a very international university with a large number of international students and offers a lot of courses taught in English. Foreign students account for about 16% of the total, coming from more than 120 countries. The university charges tuition for all international students equally. There is no difference between home and foreign countries. Instead, it follows the regulations of the Baden-Württemberg state government. Its jurisprudence, medicine, philosophy and forestry are proud leading disciplines. The economics department gave birth to the famous Freiburg School, which played a guiding role in the post-war economic recovery in Germany.
