Hong Kong Baptist University was formerly known as the Hong Kong Baptist College founded in 1956. It was renamed Hong Kong Baptist College in 1972. The first principal was Dr. Lin Zifeng. The school monument was inscribed by a famous educator, calligrapher, writer and Professor Han Jiaxuan of Tsinghua University. . At present, the university has eight colleges: the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Business Administration, the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the School of Communication, the School of Science, the School of Visual Arts, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the School of Continuing Education. The first six colleges have more than 40 undergraduate majors and more than 30 advanced degree courses. The university currently has nearly 500 full-time teaching staff and nearly 6,000 students, including more than 4,300 undergraduates, more than 4,500 graduate students, and nearly 200 international exchange students. The School of Continuing Education offers associate degree, bachelor's and master's degrees, as well as certificate/diploma and short-term refresher courses, with 50,000 students per year.
In the early days of its establishment, the Institute only offered diploma courses in the Department of Foreign Literature, the Department of Sociology, the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Business Administration. Since 1986, the school has offered degree programs. In November 1994, the Legislative Council passed the relevant regulations. The Hong Kong Baptist College was officially upgraded to a university and became one of the eight higher education institutions in Hong Kong funded by the Government University Grants Committee and awarded a degree.
Since its establishment, the Hong Kong Baptist University has been providing a number of innovative courses to support the development of Hong Kong society. The famous ones include communication science, Chinese medicine, social work, human resources management and political and international relations. The courses of Chinese Studies, Physical Health Management, European Studies, Translation Studies and Humanities, which were run by Baptist University, were also pioneered in Hong Kong.
Apart from this, the "Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated Kindergarten" (located at Kowloon Tong) and the "Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wang Kam Fai Primary and Secondary School" (Siu Mun, Sha Tin) are also affiliated to the Hong Kong Baptist University.
In 2005, Hong Kong Baptist University and Beijing Normal University established the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University Joint International College (cooperative school) for the UIC in Zhuhai, Mainland China. Upon graduation, students were awarded a bachelor's degree from Hong Kong Baptist University. .
In 2007, Hong Kong Baptist University admitted the 9-year-old Shen Shi into the Bachelor's and Master's programs in the Department of Reading, becoming the youngest university student in Hong Kong's history.
In 2010, the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Business Administration received AACSB certification.
In 2013, the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Business Administration received EQUIS certification and AMBA certification. Become a business school with no more than one percent of the world's three certifications (AACSB & EQUIS & AMBA).
In 2014, Hong Kong Baptist University and Nanjing University and the Huizhou Municipal People's Government of Guangdong Province officially launched the “Nanjing University-Hong Kong Baptist University Huizhou Rao Zongyi National College”.
In 2016, the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Business and Management again received a five-year AACSB, EQUIS dual certification, affirming the world-class status of the University of Hong Kong.
